Every April and October, Haddam-Killingworth Youth and Family Services partners with our Resident State Troopers for the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to collect expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs, over-the-counter pills, controlled and non-controlled substances, and used vapes. This event aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs while reducing the potential misuse of medications.
On April 22, HK Youth and Family Services collected 35.4 lbs at the Higganum Site and 89.5 lbs at the Killingworth site. The medications were then taken by the troopers to Troop F. From there, DEA agents transported them to the incinerator used for such purposes.
We are grateful to our Resident State Troopers, Rich Mulhall of Killingworth and Josh Muckle of Haddam for their assistance; our local Pharmacists, Greg McKenna of Nutmeg Pharmacy in Higganum and Keith Lyke of Killingworth Family Pharmacy for helping us promote the event and allowing us to do the collection in their parking lots; and our HKYFS volunteers Jane Baird, Betty Devlin, Kim Kelly, Louise Hayash and Carol Dupuis. We would also like to thank those who came out to be sure their medications were disposed of properly, avoiding misuse and contamination of landfills and water supplies.
The fall date for the next National Drug Take Back Day is October 28, 2023.
