Haddam-Killingworth Youth and Families Services and HKIMS are partnering to offer this event, “Gearing Up for Middle School”. This is a hands-on evening designed to encourage conversation, address excitement/fears around moving up to 6th grade, and facilitate early prevention strategies for youth and families. Research tells us that talking early and often about worries, expectations, excitement, and risky behavior is extremely important now, and as children continue to grow through Middle and High School. All parents and caregivers will receive information and resources to take home to continue conversation and connection.
HK data consistently shows that parents/caregivers are a huge influence in their kids’ lives! Family rules, expectations, and open conversations are one of the top reasons HK students report choosing not to use alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. HKYFS partners with the HK Schools every two years to survey youth in grades 7-12 about substance use, risky behaviors, and mental health, as well as protective factors in making positive choices. With average first use of alcohol and marijuana occurring during the middle school and early high school years, we are committed to providing our younger students and families with support and resources.
This year members of the high school’s Ignite Club- a group of teen leaders dedicated to wellness, prevention, and positive choices will join HKYFS and the administrators at HKIS and HKMS.
