December Newsletter

Haddam-Killingworth Youth and Family Services Monthly Newsletter

As we wrap up the year, we want to wish our community a very happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year. We are incredibly grateful for our partners, supporters, youth, and families whose continued trust and involvement make our work possible. Your support and collaboration have made 2025 a meaningful and impactful year, and we are excited for all that’s to come in 2026. As a reminder, the HKYFS office will be closed on December 25 and January 1. We look forward to connecting with you in the new year.

Prevention Starts at Home This Holiday Season!

As we head into the holiday season, we want to take a moment to remind parents and community members why prevention matters more than ever. Holidays often bring celebrations, gatherings, and increased access to alcohol and other substances. While it may seem harmless to allow teens to drink at home or “under supervision,” it is important to remember that in Connecticut, supplying alcohol to anyone under 21 is illegal under the Social Host Law. This includes providing alcohol directly or knowingly allowing it to be consumed in your home or on your property.

If they cannot buy it, do not supply it.

Research consistently shows that early access to alcohol increases the risk of impaired driving, injuries, poor decision-making, and long-term substance use issues. Setting clear expectations and boundaries helps keep our youth safe and sends a powerful message that their health and future matter.

We encourage parents to:

• Talk openly with your teens about expectations during the holidays

• Know where your child is and who they are with

• Secure alcohol and medications in your home

• Communicate with other parents before gatherings

Prevention starts with us. By working together as a community, we can help ensure this holiday season is safe, healthy, and substance-free for our youth.

Thank you for doing your part.
