Youth in Action

Youth in Action

Haddam-Killingworth Youth In Action is a group of high school youth from Haddam and Killingworth that focuses on community service and prevention activities. The group meets once per week during their lunch activity period. Some activities may take place after school or on weekends.

Community service is known to be a powerful protective factor in stopping youth drug use before it starts. Community service builds self esteem, builds community, teaches useful skills, and strengthens student relationships. Students learn a sense of responsibility, and the knowledge that an individual or a group of individuals can make a difference. Many of the group’s activities are made possible by a grant from the Middlesex County Substance Abuse Action Council www.mcsaac.org. We thank them for their support.

This group is facilitated by Youth and Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth staff. Permission slips completed by a parent or guardian are needed. Please call 345-7498 or email Ann@hkyfs.org for a current schedule or to request a permission slip.

Habitat for Humanity

This group is open to all high school youth. The group collaborates with the Middlesex Habitat for Humanity of Connecticut, Inc. www.habitatmiddlesex.org to tackle the housing needs of their communities.

The group will meet once a month during lunch/activity period, and also on scheduled work days (Saturday’s), when a project arises with Middlesex Habitat.

Habitat for Humanity will provide the youth with basic construction skills, safety, and time management. The youth will also learn how to work and function as a team and accomplish set tasks. Not only will the youth learn how to work as a team, but also the members will be able to step up and take leadership roles. The tasks that are given are subject to the age guidelines established by Habitat for Humanity.

This group is facilitated by Youth and Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth staff. Permission slips completed by a parent or guardian are needed. Please call 345-7498 or email Ann@hkyfs.org for a current schedule or to request a permission slip.

Peer to Peer Mentoring Program

This program pairs up third and fourth grade students at Burr Elementary School with positive role models from the High School. The high school students travel once a week during their lunch activity period to spend time with the younger students in a mentoring role. By participating in both large group and one on one activities, the students ultimately create meaningful relationships. Each age group benefits from the experience.

High School mentors are required to apply for the program, submit letters of reference and participate in a training program prior to their inclusion in the program. Participants will earn community service hours. Prospective mentors should call 345-7498 or email Cheryl@hkyfs.org to apply for this program.

Elementary students are welcome to join by parent and/or teacher request. A permission slip must be completed by a parent or guardian and submitted to Youth and Family Services. Call 345-7498 or email Ann@hkyfs.org for more information or to obtain a permission slip.
